Consciously saying ‘no’ - as opposed to just saying ‘no’ - has several benefits on a personal and organisational level.
I believe that when we get clear on our values, our wants, and our needs, we are able to take conscious choices and stand firm in our decisions and to clearly communicate what we want and what we stand for.
Growing up, we learn (or assume!) what behaviour is acceptable and what is not and we create rules around those learnings. As adults, with much better self-control, those rules may be too tight and may not serve us any longer, but rather hamper our development and restrict us from accessing our full capacity.
Don’t shy away from what you want, from opportunities, from challenges.
What holds us back holds the lure of keeping us in our comfort zone. The comfort zone is to us what the cave is to the cave man: safety. In the cave, the cave man is safe from the rough elements and predators.
... and standing with the face pressed against it, is usually not the winning strategy to finding a solution. Complex problems have no linear solution; creativity is required.
... is a sure way to be chased by them. There are better ways to deal with them and to use the insights they contain.
